The Construction Execution Plan – Project Planning for Success

If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.” Benjamin Franklin

Effective and thorough project planning before starting work on a new job is essential to any construction project. Contractors often focus on winning the work and then rush to start the job – but taking enough time to plan the work in advance is just as important. The Construction Execution Plan (CEP) helps contractors plan out jobs by answering these questions:

  • What’s the business need and what are the project objectives?
  • Who will participate, when will they participate and what roles will they have?
  • How will the project be contracted, sequenced, managed and controlled?
  • When will stage transitions and specific activities take place?
  • What monitoring, control and governance criteria need to be applied?
  • Are there any extraordinary initiatives that may be required which need to be planned and budgeted for?

By answering these and other questions in a definitive manner and committing it to paper in the CEP, contractors can save time and money, improve quality and reduced scope changes.

This workshop will discuss the elements of creating an efficient and organized Construction Execution Plan which includes: understanding scope, contractual requirements and budget, assigning the best project team, site logistics, sequence of work, schedule, project resources and identifying risk and opportunity and more. The Construction Execution Plan should show in simple language the sequence of events required to build the project and to meet key milestones. Once complete, it will be used to provide information to others about how the project will be managed and constructed, and as a “road map” for the project team members to actually manage and construct the building.
