Building Code: Mezzanines and Interconnected Floor Spaces (NBC 2020)

Description

This session will provide you with an understanding of the application of Subsection 3.2.8. Mezzanines and Openings through Floor Assemblies of the 2020 National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) to buildings regulated by Part 3 of the Code.

The mezzanine and interconnected floor space requirements of the NBC can have a major impact on the construction requirements applicable to new construction and to existing buildings. Many building owners fulfill a need for extra storage or office space by constructing a mezzanine floor or interconnected floor space. If this is done without first acquiring the required building permit, there can be major problems trying to achieve Code compliance after the fact.

Topics:

  • Relevant Code Definitions
  • Article 3.2.1.1. Exceptions in Determining Building Height
  • Requirement for a Mezzanine to Terminate at a Vertical Fire Separation
  • Exceptions to Special Protection
  • Means of Egress from Mezzanines
  • Interconnected Floor Spaces
  • Workshop Problems

BONUS!  Included in your course registration is Building Code Software designed and maintained by John Frye.  This is exclusive software that you will NOT find anywhere else!

NOTE: In anticipation of the pending adoption of the 2020 NBCC in Manitoba this training will be based on the 2020 code.  References will be made to the 2010 and 2015 NBCC to identify any differences and changes. A brief overview of what's new in the 2020 NBCC will also be presented.
