BUILDING CODE: Spatial Separation and Exposure Protection

Description

Spatial separation rules drive big design decisions: how close a building can sit to a property line, how much glass you can use, and what level of fire resistance your walls need. This session cuts through the code language and shows you how to apply Subsection 3.2.3 of the 2020 National Building Code of Canada (NBC) on real projects. You’ll learn how to work the NBC tables, calculate limiting distances, and design compliant building faces without costly surprises.

Topics:

  • City of Winnipeg Part 3 Design Summary for Spatial Separation Requirements
  • Relevant Code Definitions
  • Background to the Spatial Separation Requirement of the NBCC
  • Determining the Percentage of Unprotected Openings Permitted for a Given Limiting Distance Using Tables 3.2.3.1. B., C., D., and E. of the 2015 NBCC
